GLENDALE, Ariz. -- The NFL rules, even in the Valley of the Sun where Arizona Cardinals fans welcomed a new quarterback to the team Thursday night.

The Cardinals hosted an NFL Draft party for football fans outside of University of Phoenix Stadium.

The event took place on the Great Lawn just across the street from the home of the Cardinals and was free admission for all, including the parking, bringing in thousands of fans from around the valley.

The event was a fun date night idea or even a family outing, featuring entertainment for everyone. There were kids running around playing football, adults and kids enjoying the zip lining attraction, and a pop-up shop for Arizona Cardinals merchandise.

Food trucks provided cuisine, and the most popular option for the kids was the shaved ice, which drew long lines.

The Arizona Cardinals Cheerleaders hosted a junior cheer clinic inside the draft party. This also gave parents some solo time to enjoy the alcoholic beverages offered while taking in the excitement of the event.

There were two big screens on the west side of the lawn with a huge stage in between. The Cardinals Cheerleaders performed a few routines throughout the night, keeping the fans' energy high for the first-round draft pick that came earlier than expected.

Arizona dealt the 15th overall pick to the Oakland Raiders for the No. 10 spot,  parting with a third-round pick and a fifth-round pick as well. The Cardinals made the move to acquire the franchise's future quarterback and former UCLA star, Josh Rosen.

This was the Cardinals'  highest quarterback draft pick since 2006, when they selected Matt Leinart. The team can only hope Rosen has a better career.

The fans were quick to get rowdy in support of the "Bird Gang" and its newest addition, though Rosen wasn't everyone's consensus pick.

Cardinals president  Michael Bidwill, went on stage discussing his teams' draft pick shortly after it was announced.

“We got our guy, we’re super excited about Josh Rosen and you should be too!” Bidwill said.

The crowd roared.

Bidwill went on to explain how Rosen was just recently in town and put much emphasis on how motivated and dedicated he is to the game of football, making him a valuable asset for the Cardinals.

Jackie Bayless, a life-long Cardinals fan, thinks this could potentially bring a long-awaited Super Bowl to the valley.

“This is what we need and what we have been waiting for, we needed a new quarterback and it makes me excited to watch the upcoming season,” Bayless said.

Arizona has two new QBs on the roster in projected starter Sam Bradford and backup Mike Glennon, so Rosen might spend the season learning from them. Or he could have a big role sooner or later, given what the Cardinals gave up to get him.

The Cardinals merchandise shop at the event already had a Rosen jersey available for fans to get their hands on. A more recent fan of the Cardinals and UCLA alum James Smith bought his first-ever Cardinals jersey at the draft event.

“I came out here tonight with friends since I recently took a job here in the Valley and didn’t even know they were going to get someone from UCLA, so now I feel like I have to support them,” Smith said. He went on to add that his family is from Texas and they probably won’t be happy about him wearing something other than Cowboys gear.

The most popular attraction of the evening was the Cardinals autograph signing from the players and the cheerleaders.
