ASU seek Pac-12 title

By - Dec 07, 2013

TEMPE, Ariz. -- After a rather eventful season, there’s only one game standing between the Arizona State Sun Devils and their chance at the PAC-12 conference title.

The last hurdle remaining is Saturday’s rematch against Stanford, who originally defeated ASU 42-28 in September. However this time the Devils have home field advantage.

Currently on seven-game winning streak, the Devils have significantly improved in nearly all areas to blame for the first Cardinal win, having lost only one game since. The primary focus for Arizona State has been, and remains, on the special teams, aside from true freshman kicker Zane Gonzalez.

Since missing a 45-yard field goal at Stanford, Gonzalez hasn’t missed a single kick. After his performance in the Territorial Cup victory against Arizona, he has racked up to a total of 124 points on the season on top of setting the school’s all-time record of 18 consecutive field goals. Gonzalez was also named the PAC-12 Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time.

UPDATE: Gonzalez's streak came to and in the third quarter Saturday when he missed a 31-yard try wide left.

Gonzalez, whose recognition makes him the only special teams player to be named twice in one season, is now only three field goals short of the NCAA freshman record as he enters Saturday’s title game.
