Iga Swiatek acknowledges that she and Aryna Sabalenka are two completely different personalities but is refusing to declare herself “the good one” and label the Belarusian “as the bad one.” Swiatek and Sabalenka, the two top-ranked players in the game, have one of the best rivalries on the WTA Tour.
When it comes to their personalities, there is an evident difference as Swiatek is an introvert, while Sabalenka is extroverted. When asked by some fans declaring her as “the good one” and putting the negative label on Sabalenka, Swiatek underlined she doesn’t want to see stuff like that being thrown around.
“I see that Poles don’t really like her. We simply have two completely different personalities colliding. You can see the contrast. I wouldn’t say I’m a good character and she’s a bad one, because that puts her in a negative light.
We are just different. I don’t want to be one of those people who judges. I know what life is like on the Internet and I don’t want to contribute to hatred towards anyone. First of all, we have great respect for each other and are kind to each other,” Swiatek told Rzeczpospolita.
Swiatek regained the No 1 spot from Sabalenka
After the US Open, Sabalenka replaced Swiatek at the top spot and became the world No 1 for the first time in her career. At the time, Swiatek was struggling with confidence and it appeared likely that Sabalenka would finish as the Year-End No 1.
But Swiatek then won Beijing and also went 5-0 at the WTA Finals to regain the world No 1 spot. “Coming back to world No 1, it’s a dream come true for sure. I would say I wasn’t expecting that right now this season. I was kind of hoping that maybe next year is going to be my year.
But it seems like I’m just working hard and focusing on the right things and work. So I’m really happy,” Swiatek said after winning the WTA Finals.
