Rory McIlroy explains why he supports golf ball rollback

The R&A and USGA unveiled a plan on Wednesday to implement a golf ball roll-back for professional players by 2028 and for amateurs by 2030. Many are not satisfied with these changes. The majority of golfers expressed dissatisfaction and do not understand why governing bodies make such decisions at all.

Rory McIlroy is one of the few who supports such changes, even though he is one of the best hitters.
“For the last couple of decades, we have been talking about what to do, especially as golf courses are getting longer, they’re needing more acreage to build courses, is that sustainable?” -McIlroy said, as quoted by golfmonthly.com!

The Northern Irishman believes that many factors at play favor this decision. Although there is general displeasure, McIlroy’s words are causing many to wonder if this is the case. “Because they’re building more acreage they’re needing more water to maintain them.

There’s all of these environmental factors that come into it – I think that’s the biggest reason we should do this.”

McIlroy believes that such changes will influence golfers to show their skills in the best way.

Rory expects golf to benefit greatly from these changes. “But, also, from a professional that plays the game, I think it’ll bring back some skills into the pro game that have maybe been lost. I actually think it will make the pro game more entertaining to watch.

I think you’re going to see a different variety of games succeed, it’s not just going to be this bomb and gouge that we see predominantly now when you watch the top level of golf.”- he concluded.
