Lakers/Rockets, round 2 was a thrilling contest as you could have hoped for — LeBron vs. Dillion the Villain, Anthony Davis vs. Alperen Sengun and much, much more.
From myself and @jovanbuha, a running diary of a fun evening.

that Sengun iso at the end is going to be huge for his rapid evolution. cant think of a single bigger confidence-builder than bullyballing that man with the game on the line. – 12:09 AM

Rockets lose another nail-biter in LA, fall 105-104 to the Lakers. Tough defensive choice by Dillon Brooks to let LeBron get free — he gets fouled with 1.9 seconds left and hits 1-2 free throws to win it. Brooks had 24 points, Sengun 21-10-5 and VanVleet handed out 16 assists. – 12:06 AM

A tough call on the Lakers here, as Sengun appeared to be moving, but Davis was called for a charge, his 6th personal with 58 seconds to play.
Lakers used their challenge on an earlier AD foul call. – 11:55 PM

Correct call. That’s a common foul on Brooks, not a flagrant. It’s also his fifth foul, matching Sengun and Davis. AK – 11:54 PM

After Anthony Davis picked up his fifth foul, Rockets immediately posted up Sengun to get his sixth. But Sengun missed and James blasted his way down the lane for a slam that has much of the crowd on its feet through the Rockets time out. – 11:42 PM

The Rockets are really moving the ball. They average a little over 25 assists a game but just handed out 20 in the first half alone against the Lakers. Fred VanVleet has 10 dimes and Alperen Sengun added 5. – 10:46 PM

More on this storyline
Turkish center Alperen Sengun making noise in the NBA attracted the attention of LeBron James. The ageless superstar lifted the Los Angeles Lakers over the Houston Rockets but praised Sengun after the NBA Sundays contest. “He is getting more comfortable in every game,” evaluated James, “Obviously, he can post very effectively. He has a great ball-handling ability, can see the floor, great passing. He is a really good young piece.” -via EuroHoops.net / November 20, 2023
The second reason is stylistic. Sengun’s skill set is unconventional, highly valuable, and tailor-made to dominate the modern NBA. His strengths are a direct descendent of what big men like Jokic and Domantas Sabonis currently are—hyper-efficient, pass-first control centers who push buttons and pull levers for some of the greatest offenses in history. “Obviously, you see the fancy passes, behind-the-back no-looks, and all that. It reminds me of some [Arvydas] Sabonis stuff, who I grew up watching a little bit in Portland,” Udoka tells me. “It’s almost like he gets bored with the game at times and wants to try to make the difficult pass instead of the simple one because he sees it ahead of time.” -via The Ringer / November 17, 2023
When the Houston Rockets drafted Alperen Sengun, they were very concerned about how he would adjust to life in the NBA. Still only 19 years old, the Turkish teenager couldn’t speak any English. They worried for nothing. “He had absolutely no adjustment period,” Rockets general manager Rafael Stone tells me. “None. Zero. And that’s nothing we did. It’s entirely his personality.” -via The Ringer / November 17, 2023
