Daniil Medvedev finished the season inside the top-3, backed by five ATP titles and 12 top-10 wins. One of the finest came at the US Open, with the Russian dethroning Carlos Alcaraz 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in three hours and 19 minutes at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Daniil’s coach, Gilles Servara, explained what they had to do to overcome Alcaraz after two tough losses in Indian Wells and Wimbledon. Medvedev took charge in the decisive moments, overpowering Alcaraz in sets two and four and entering his fifth Major final.
Daniil dominated with his first serve, earning the victory after erasing eight out of nine break points. He broke the Spaniard four times, enough to emerge at the top. Medvedev won 20 points more than Alcaraz, taking charge in the decisive moments and avenging the Wimbledon loss.
Daniil had to work hard early on, fending off two break points in the fourth game and leveling the score at 2-2. They served well and introduced a tie break, with the Russian earning two return points at 4-3 for two set points.
He seized the first with a forehand winner, wrapping up the opener after 56 minutes and gaining a boost. Daniil was the only player on the court in the second set, serving well and keeping the pressure on his rival. The Russian broke in the second game and had a chance to move 4-0 up, missing two break points.
Medvedev delivered another break at 4-1 with a cracking backhand, extending the gap and holding at 30 in game seven to build a massive two sets to love lead after an hour and 33 minutes. Carlos raised his level in the third set, serving well and delivering a break in game four with a lob winner.
Daniil Medvedev defeated Carlos Alcaraz at the US Open.
The Spaniard served for the set at 5-3, firing a service winner and reducing the overall deficit. Medvedev struggled at 1-1 in the fourth set, saving three break points and gaining a boost.
Alcaraz earned seven game points at 2-3, squandering them and losing serve after Medvedev’s sharp return. Daniil served for the victory in game nine and faced three break points, with Carlos looking eager to extend the battle.
The Russian denied them and converted the fourth match point with a smash winner at the net, emerging at the top and arranging the title clash against Novak Djokovic. “We thought about what he could improve in Daniil’s game to have a chance against Carlos.
We had to prevent Carlos from dominating as he did in Indian Wells and Wimbledon. We could not know if it would work because Carlos has the tools to trouble Daniil, including his powerful strokes and the net rushings. We decided to be aggressive, and I explained to Daniil he could not wait for Carlos’ mistakes but to push and go for his shots. He performed brilliantly, achieving one of the finest victories of his career,” Gilles Cervara said.
