Despite a leak, the numbers are still looking good for CrossFit.

Last updated on March 15th, 2024

Now that the 2024 CrossFit Open announcements are over, we can see the full picture of the livestream numbers and learn a bit more about the sport’s growth and overall fans and followers.

One big thing: The maximum concurrent views (how many people were watching at once) for the 24.3 announcement were down substantially from 24.2, and even came in lower than any of the Open announcements in 2023. However, the overall livestream views (after 24 hours) for 24.3 hit an all-time high, getting over 1 million views.

The details: The 24.3 announcement recorded a maximum concurrent viewership of 112,802 (unofficially) and a total view count of 1,030,276 after 24 hours.

How does this compare?

24.3 24.2 24.1 23.3 23.2 23.1
Max Concurrent  112,802 206,012 161,127 128,658 120, 336  113,624
Total Views (24 hours) 1,030,276 835,042 872,651 588,000 649,779 619,894
  • The max concurrent average for the 2022 Open was 96,048; in 2023, it was 120,872. The 2024 Open clocked in at 159,980.
  • The total views (24 hours) per week average for the 2023 Open was 619,224, while total views (after 24 hours) for 24.3 came in at 1,030,276. That’s a difference of 411,052 views. The average 24-hour total views per week during the 2024 Open was 912,656.

Why so low? We could speculate on why the live concurrent numbers were lower this week compared to previous weeks. One potential reason is that the details of the workout were leaked on multiple social media channels prior to the event. Many athletes and fans undoubtedly saw this leak, which could have possibly decreased the allure of Jocko Willink’s live reveal.

Open workouts have leaked before, but you can never tell if the information is accurate until the announcement itself. This same thing happened back in 2022 when Open Workout 22.3 leaked early with completely accurate information. With that memory still relatively fresh, maybe potential viewers decided to tune out.

However, the 24-hour total views add up to the remarkably high total of 1,030,276, which could indicate that while many skipped the live announcement of the workout, they still returned later to watch the recorded version of the four-way elite athlete throwdown.

The bottom line: As of Friday morning, the 24.3 announcement peaked at the 12th highest trending video on YouTube. After only 24 hours, the total views have surpassed the 24.1 and 24.2 views after an entire week and are well above previous years. This could point to CrossFit’s upward trend and increasing reach.
