Daniil Medvedev bows to Carlos Alcaraz: the highlights

The young Spanish champion Carlos Alcaraz reversed the trend of his performances, qualifying as winner of the Red Group at the ATP Finalsn 2023, thanks to the convincing victory against Daniil Medvedev in straight sets. Carlitos will now challenge Novak Djokovic in what will be the most awaited semifinal (except for Italian fans!) at the year-end Masters.

In the other semifinal, Jannik Sinner will face Medvedev, an opponent he defeated twice in a row in the finals between Beijing and Vienna.

Alcaraz played a sumptuous match against Medvedev: he did not tremble and came back from 15-40 in the fourth game, reversing the situation with a winning serve and an ace.

The true technical and tactical masterpiece, however, arrived at 3-3, when Carlitos definitely raised the level and broke his rival, hitting a wonderful backhand return. Alcaraz protected the lead with extreme confidence and no longer allowed Medvedev to reopen the match in the first set.

The Russian tried to be slightly more aggressive in the second set of the game, but things didn’t change. Medvedev erased two break points at 1-1, but Alcaraz committed two uncharacteristic free throws, making his way downhill.

The clutch moment of the match was to be found in the terrible game played by Medvedev at 4-4: the Russian missed a comfortable forehand and ended his match with a painful double fault. Alcaraz had started with a defeat at the ATP Finals.

Spganolo had also arrived in Turin from a negative moment, which had continued since the victorious Wimbledon final. Yet, between the victory with Rublev and the one with Medvedev, Carlitos rediscovered all the formidable skills that we admired in the first part of the season.

I want to write a personal opinion: Alcaraz, like Djokovic and Nadal, managed to raise his level in the decisive moment. Turning clutch moments to your advantage is a prerogative that only epochal champions can have.
