Great Britain has drawn France in the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers as that’s when Emma Raducanu could potentially make her return to the British team. Raducanu, 20, made her Billie Jean King Cup debut during Britain’s 2022 qualifiers against the Czech Republic.
But since then, Raducanu has missed the 2022 and 2023 WTA Finals, as well as this year’s qualifiers against France. After losing to France in the 2023 Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers, Great Britain is set to meet France in back-to-back years.
Raducanu, who was the top-ranked British player at the time of the tie against France, skipped the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers weekend and prioritized a WTA tournament in Stuttgart. Explaining her absence, Raducanu said switching from hard to clay in a few days would be too risky for her.
Will Raducanu return to the British BJK Cup team in 2024?
In Raducanu’s absence, some other British players have stepped up and done well. Earlier this month, British Billie Jean King Cup team captain Anne Keothavong was asked if Raducanu was guaranteed a spot on the team when she returns to being healthy and ready to play again. “I don’t think anyone can guarantee a spot on this team.
They set the bar high for the others who want to be on this team, which is good. But everyone’s hungry and everyone wants to be part of that, so for me as captain, hopefully, we’ll be spoilt for choice,” Keothavong said earlier this month.
After making her Billie Jean King Cup debut in 2022, Raducanu insisted that it was “a special moment” in her young career. “Making my debut for team GB in April was a special moment that I’ll never forget. Stepping out on court and seeing all the flags flying, all of your team cheering you on, it’s such a unique event that I’m really looking forward to experiencing again.
Having the opportunity to host the finals in your home country doesn’t come around very often so we’ll do everything we can to make our fans proud,” Raducanu said in 2022.
