The final Rogue Fitness challenge of 2023, “The Sleigh Ride,” spans Dec. 15-26, 2023, tasking participants to row 10,000 meters for time. While that competition is still ongoing at the time of this article’s publication, it did not prevent Rogue from releasing the first fitness challenge of 2024.

“The Standard Challenge,” revealed on Dec. 13, 2023, tasks participants to row the maximum number of meters possible in 24 hours. This challenge “is open to individuals or teams of 2, 3, or 4.” The contest began on Dec. 16, 2023, and ends on Jan. 2, 2024, at 8 p.m. EST.

Note, per the Rogue Fitness website: “The Standard Challenge” is not part of the overall Rogue Challenge competition. No points are awarded on the overall leaderboard, and there are no cash or gear prizes for this challenge.

Although The Standard Challenge does not have a monetary prize purse to top finishers like other Rogue Challenges (RC) that affect the RC leaderboard, it is not without a good cause beyond the fitness gains:

A portion of the proceeds for each signup will benefit The Big Fish Foundation.

The Big Fish Foundation “helps military veterans re-discover a shared common purpose in civilian life through a wide range of specially organized events and activities. These shared experiences are designed to help promote psychological wellness, effectively manage post-traumatic/combat stress, and prevent suicide.”

Benefits of Rowing

Rowing is commonly used in CrossFit competitions and functional fitness training. It involves a fluid full-body motion with each rep, the benefits of which are well-documented. A 2014 comparative study in Bio-Medical Materials and Engineering found that “After the rowing exercise, significant improvement in every joint was witnessed. All aspects of basic fitness increased significantly, and the most improvement was observed in muscle strength from the joint torque results.” (1)

Registration for The Standard Challenge is available on Roguefitness.com//challenges/the-standard.
