Iga Swiatek has responded to Novak Djokovic’s praise as the 22-year-old Pole says she is someone who is always doing everything 100 percent and also someone who has never wanted to waste any time on the court. At the start of the US Open, world No 1 Djokovic called Iga Swiatek “a champion” and described the WTA world No 1 as someone who plays every game with the same intensity – even when she is up big.
After collecting 22 sets with a 6-0 scoreline last year, Swiatek had 23 bagel sets in 2023. “I remember I always didn’t feel like wasting time on the court, and when I was doing something, I always felt a have to do it one hundred percent.
There was a time when I simply couldn’t play like that, with the same focus and intensity. It was only in 2022 when I reached such a level that everything came together and started to work. These are also the results of my work with psychologist Daria Abramowicz, because when it comes to focus, I have never been the best at this element before.
And now I’m actually the best on the tour and many players can learn from us. That’s why I’m proud of myself and the team,” Swiatek told Super Express – Sport.
What did Djokovic exactly say about Swiatek?
Since Ashleigh Barty’s sudden retirement, Swiatek has achieved the most in women’s tennis and has established herself as the most dominant player in the game.
This year, Swiatek won a total of 54 sets with a 6-0 or a 6-1 scoreline. By having 20+ bagel sets in back-to-back years, Swiatek became the first player to achieve that feat since Steffi Graf and Monica Seles in 1991 and 1992.
“Iga has been dominating the women’s game last couple of years, she is a multiple Grand Slam winner. I love her devotion and dedication. Maybe she’s too humble to say, too modest to say, but she’s got a great fighting spirit, no doubt.
She’s a warrior, goes out there and doesn’t give a single game. She has probably the most bagels of anyone in women’s tennis the last few years. It speaks about how seriously and professionally she’s taking every single point and game on the court.
So that’s very admirable. I really like that kind of champion spirit and mindset,” Djokovic said of Swiatek in August.
