Jannik Sinner’s career exploded: 2024 confirmed the progress already shown in 2023, definitively exacerbating them and elevating them to the level of the greatest champions of our beloved tennis.
The title won at the Miami Open is the 13th title of his career, the 2nd ATP Masters 1000 won in his career: Sinner finally triumphed in Florida in the third final played, the second in a row.
After losing the semi-final in Indian Wells against Carlos Alcaraz, the Italian exploded the field again and, at the Miami Open, achieved yet another great success of the season, overcoming Grigor Dimitrov in the final of the US event.
A success that will allow him to make an important overtaking on Alcaraz and become the new No.2 in the ATP ranking. No Italian, including the pre-Open era, had ever managed to go so high.
A unique achievement that confirms the rise of a champion willing to overcome every limit and every barrier to improve himself every day.
Italian tennis will therefore be able to enjoy this new and fantastic chapter in a story that has never gone so far.
The next goal could be to attack the 1st position in the ATP ranking currently occupied by Novak Djokovic and establish himself as the most successful Italian tennis player of all time, surpassing Nicola Pietrangeli.
Sinner has already won the first Major in his career at the Australian Open, last January 28th, completing the comeback in the final against Daniil Medvedev. Pietrangeli won the Roland Garros twice in his career in 1959 and 1960.
Grigor Dimitrov bows to Jannik Sinner
There was nothing Grigor Dimitrov could do in the Miami Open final. In the end, as predicted, Sinner won the ATP Masters 1000 in Florida. After a fought first set, especially in the first phase, in which the Bulgarian had the chance to take a 2-0 lead, the Italian raised his level, becoming unplayable.
In the second set there was practically no more match. The difference between the two tennis players became more evident and the match ended with the final score of 6-3 6-1, in just over an hour.
“Congratulations to Jannik and his team, you’ve had an exceptional start to the season, you’re playing amazingly, it’s nice to watch you but definitely not to face you. I tried to do my best, it was always a difficult tournament for me, probably the most difficult ever.
Thanks to the sponsors, to the tournament director. Even though I didn’t win, I really felt the affection of the audience and I’m very happy with my performance. I also thank my corner, thanks to you I feel like a winner,” said Dimitrov at the on-court interview.
At the end of the match, Dimitrov took part in the awards ceremony, congratulating Sinner and his team for the excellent work done in recent months. The Bulgarian also made a joke about his young colleague, who tells how much he has now become feared and respected in the Tour.
Sinner thus won his second ATP Masters 1000 title at the third attempt in Florida, the first in the US, after the victory at the Canadian Open in 2023. On the first two occasions the Italian had lost in the final in Miami against Hubert Hurkacz in 2021 and, last year, by Daniil Medvedev.
For the Bulgarian, however, it is the second defeat in the final of an ATP Masters 1000 in the space of a few months. In November he lost to Novak Djokovic in Paris Bercy. Despite the clear defeat this evening, Grigor is back in the top 10 today after more than 7 years, when he reached 3rd position.
His season therefore remains very positive, where he has already won a trophy, in Brisbane, Australia.
Dimitrov also added at the press conference: “Overall I want to focus only on the positive notes. It was a tournament in which I hadn’t played well in recent years. My goal was to come here and do my best. I was very determined throughout the competition. A lot happened behind the scenes too.
I beat very good players, high quality tennis players. It’s clear that it’s Jannik Sinner’s week, he played incredible tennis. It’s really impressive how he’s managed to maintain his way of playing.
Now I have to see what awaits me. I don’t have much time to feel sad about myself. I want to continue with the sensations I have at the moment. This is my next step. Now let’s start with the clay, which I can’t wait to compete on.
I will have a few days to evaluate what I did well and what I can improve. I feel like a lot of his games have been like that, he has incredible game speed. I always say that every tennis player has his own weaknesses.
Maybe next time I play against him I’ll try something different. I couldn’t live up to his tennis or his shots. I think I did well at some point but a lot of important moments fell on his side.
Once he has a little more confidence, it becomes even harder to play him. Now Jannik is playing incredible tennis and I feel we shouldn’t compare him to other players.”
