When questioned about the significance of having Luka Doncic play from the trail position in transition, the Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd highlighted its value by pointing out that Doncic managed to score 9 points in that specific scenario during the game against the Washington Wizards.
“That’s a great question,” Kidd said. “When you talk about Luka, you can’t hug him when he doesn’t have the ball. The ball creates energy when he throws it ahead, and he’s shown he can catch-and-shoot at a high level.
“Again, where he doesn’t have to carry a defender for 40 minutes – slapping at him or just bumping him. Now he gets to go for the walk in the park when there’s nobody on him; he’s that dangerous that he gets the ball in the trail situation, it makes the game easier.”
I asked Jason Kidd about the value of having Luka Doncic play out of the trail in transition, given he scored 9 points doing so against the Wizards:
