Jon Rahm caused a lot of backlash after signing with LIV Golf. His statements especially caused reactions. Namely, the Spaniard emphasized that he signed for LIV Golf to influence the growth of the game. His Ryder Cup colleague, Shane Lowry, believes that such statements should not be analyzed, given that the LIV officials have certainly told the players beforehand what they should say.
“I think what Jon said about growing the game and stuff that’s obviously what they have to say,” Lowry told the Irish Independent, as quoted by MIRROR!
“They’ve signed on the dotted line. They’ve been told by the communications team that this is what you say when you’re asked this and you have no other choice really because they own you now.”
Jon Rahm explains his decision
Lowry is someone who has tremendous respect for Rahm and everything he’s done in his career. Lowry seems to understand his decision. Jon Rahm emphasized that everyone has the right to choose what they want in life. Jon Rahm resisted offers from LIV Golf for a long time, but when someone offers you that much money, it’s hard to say NO.
“Every decision I feel like we make in life there will be somebody who agrees and likes it and somebody who doesn’t, right.
I made this decision because I believe it’s the best for me and my family and everybody I’ve been able to talk to has been really supportive of me, so I’m very comfortable with my decision.”– Rahm said.
Lowry believes that many have a hasty reaction. However, Rahm was clear in explaining his decision.
“I don’t know if it’s been damaging [to golf]. But people who have spent their hard-earned money going out to join a golf club and buy golf clubs and play golf for the weekend, it’s tough for them to listen to the guy who’s already worth whatever say he has to do this to put food on the table for his wife and kids.”
