Marozsan Routs Rune
Fabian Marozsan has taken a liking to elite opposition as he crushed Holger Rune 6-1, 6-1 in just 59 minutes.
The Hungarian has now won 3 of his four matches against players ranked inside the top 10, adding 7th seed Rune to his scalps alongside Alcaraz in Rome last year and Ruud in Shanghai.
Marozsan fired down 23 winners and averted all three break points he faced on serve to prevent Rune from gaining any foothold in the match. After the hard-hitting Aussie took out the 26th seed, Lehecka, he’ll face Alexie Popyrin.
After the match, there was talk of Rune having some illness, and he considered withdrawing, but he stepped on the court, and the result is all that’s recorded in the history books.
I really enjoy playing at the highest level. It was a great day today; I could enjoy every moment on the Stadium court. I played against a top 10 player who could be top three one day. I tried to put pressure on him and played high-intensity tennis. He didn’t find a way to come back and do something different. I try not to focus on the opponent but my game when I play. Marozsan on his win over Rune.
Machac Manouvers Past Murray
After recording back-to-back match wins for the first time since Toronto last year, Andy Murray couldn’t make it a hat trick as he fell to Tomas Machac 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(5) in 3 hours and 27 minutes.
While Murray is not the player he was, he invariably makes the opponent work hard for the victory. It was undoubtedly a hard-fought win for the Czech, who dropped the opening set and then had to handle losing a 5-2 lead in the third set, including holding a match point at 6-5, which he didn’t convert.
Murray also scored an early mini-break in the tiebreak, putting him on the brink of another classic fightback, but Machac hit back to move into the fourth round, where he’ll face Matteo Arnaldi.
Sharing the court with such a great legend is always a pleasure. So first of all, I’m happy I can play this long match against him. On the other hand, I don’t want to play so long. But in the end, there was everything. I pushed myself from the bottom to manage to win today. Machac on his hard fought win over Murray.
Medvedev Negates Norrie
Daniil Medvedev’s Miami title defence is well underway, and he’s into the fourth round thanks to a victory of 7-5 and 6-1 over Cameron Norrie.
Heading in, Medvedev had an ominous record against British opposition, having won 11 straight matches. He made a flying start to move up two breaks of serve only to see the hard-working Norrie find a way back into the set, recovering both breaks and levelling at 5-5.
However, Medvedev, who has thrown in some Tommy Paul-esque net forays this week, regrouped to break again and won six games in a row to ease into the last sixteen after 1 hour and 21 minutes.
I generally think that the service was not too bad. The first serve was quite good. Cameron returned well, so I felt like I was still there. The positive side is that when he came back in the first set, he had the momentum going. I managed to regroup myself and win it 7-5 without even going to the tie-break. In general, it’s very positive even when you lose your serve or break the guy six times in two sets. Against Cameron, it’s not that easy to go to the net. I feel like he gives you a medium ball where you feel like you can do it, and then he likes to pass you a little bit like I do sometimes. So I was quite cautious to come to the net, but when I had the chance, I had to do it. And I feel like I’m improving a lot at the net this year, and it’s a part of my game where I want to improve, so I’m pretty happy about it. Medvedev on his win and tactics vs Norrie.
Other Matches of Note
- Shelton Shuts Down Landaluce: The American put on a powerful display, winning 83 per cent (29/35) of his first serve points and powering down some heavy serves on the big points to come through 6-3 6-4 against Martin Landaluce. He faces Lorenzo Musetti next, which should be a good contrast of styles.
- Shapovalov’s Return to Form Shortlived: After seeing off Tsitsipas in the round before, many had thought Shapo had unannounced himself on tour, but he was dispatched in straights by Matteo Arnaldi 6-3 7-6(7).
- Sinner Passes Griekspoor Test: Jannik Sinner overcame a stern test from Tallong Griekspoor, recovering from dropping the first to power through 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 in a rain-affected match.
- Jarry Outwits Seyboth-Wild: Another lengthy battle for the Chilean who defeated Seyboth Wild in front of a boisterous crowd 5-7, 7-5, 6-1.
- Ruud Foils Fokina: The Norwegian won 6-3, 6-4. He saved seven break points and used his forehand expertly on the big points to progress.
