Nick Kyrgios admits being away from tennis over a longer period of time is not something that really depresses him as the Australian tennis star reveals he used this year to enjoy some other amazing things. After a career-best season in 2022, 28-year-old Kyrgios suffered a knee injury in the offseason and was forced to miss the Australian Open and all Australia events in 2023 January.
Kyrgios then decided to have a knee surgery and returned to action in June in Stuttgart, where he appeared in just one match before suffering a wrist injury and missing the rest of the 2023 season. Last week, Kyrgios sadly confirmed that he also won’t be ready for the start of the 2024 season and the Australian Open.
But while sidelined, Kyrgios has gotten to enjoy some other things.
Kyrgios on his time away from tennis
“This is a tough one for me because when I step away from the sport for so long, I actually don’t miss it. So that’s scary for me.
You know, most athletes, when they get pulled away from their sport injury or take time off, they’re like really hungry to get back with me. It’s like, I’ve always kind of known that life has so many…so many cool things about it, you know, and tennis, you know, we’re traveling seven, eight months a year.
I barely see my family, my friends. And during this time, it’s like, I get to see, spend time with my partner more, my family, do all these things that I’ve been missing out on. It’s like, wow, this, my life’s amazing now, but you know, I do miss playing tennis a bit, you know, it’s all I’ve ever known since I was seven years old, you know, my family loves it, you know, all my friends, you know, know me as Nick Kyrgios, tennis player.
So I do miss it a little bit, but at the same time, I’ve really enjoyed the time off,” Kyrgios said On Purpose with Jay Shetty.
