The semi-final lineup at the 2023 ATP Finals is set and features the four highest-ranked players, with Djokovic, Alcaraz, Medvedev and Sinner progressing from the round-robin stages.
The red group concluded on Thursday and saw Jannik Sinner help Novak Djokovic into the last four by beating Holger Rune in three sets.
The Serb had beaten Hurkacz earlier in the day, but by dropping a set, he’d given Rune a chance to qualify, as a win for the Dane would have sent Djokovic home.
On Friday, Carlos Alcaraz completed the semi-final lineup by defeating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets. The Russian had already qualified, irrespective of what happened in any of the matches on Friday.
As a result, the final match between Sascha Zverev and the long-since eliminated Andrey Rublev was a dead rubber with only personal pride, a win for the H2H record and $390,000 for the winner on the line.

Djokovic Downs Hurkacz
In Thursday’s opening singles match, Novak Djokovic bagged his second win of the group against alternate Hubert Hurkacz with a 7-6(1) 4-6 6-1 victory.
Despite the win, Hurkacz winning a set meant Sinner was through to the semi-finals, and the Serb relied on the South Tyrolian defeating Rune to progress.
During his match with Hurkacz, Djokovic’s level was somewhat up and down. The first set tiebreak was classic Djokovic, but the second set saw a significant dip in level that allowed Hurkacz to capture an early break, and the Pole didn’t drop a set behind his first serve during the set.
The third set was back to classic Djokovic as he dialled in on the return, capitalising when the Pole missed too many serves, allowing him to win just 8% (1/12) of points behind his second serve to dominate it 6-1.
My level was so and so. I think he really handed me the third set, as he missed a lot of first serves, and I got myself in a position to get into the rally. In the rallies, I think I had a better chance, but you know, a very sloppy second set uh break that I lost and yeah, but anyway win is a win, so I did my job. Djokovic on his win over Hurkacz.

Sinner Sends Rune Home
Jannik Sinner kept his perfect record at the 2023 ATP Finals alive with a hard-fought 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 win over Holger Rune.
The win also meant that Novak Djokovic progressed to the last four on Saturday. He wouldn’t have qualified had Rune pulled off the win, as the Dane would have topped the group with Sinner in second place.
In Thursday evening’s encounter, Sinner picked up from where he left off against Djokovic, bludgeoning his way to a 4-0 lead in the first set en route to taking it 6-2.
Rune, under the watchful eye of Boris Becker, needed a response, but after needing treatment on his knee midway through the second set, that looked unlikely.
However, the roles were reversed from the fifth game onwards as Rune began to move better, while Sinner frequently clutched his back. The Dane finally capitalised at 6-5 by breaking Sinner to force a decider.
Momentum was now on Rune’s side, but it was Sinner’s turn to find a second wind, saving a break point in game seven and breaking decisively in game eight before serving it out 6-4 to send Rune packing.
For me it was really important, resetting after the good win against Novak. I never won against Rune, so I really tried my best. I started off really well. In the second, he served better; he moved better, so it was a much more even match. The third set could have gone his way. At 4-3, I saved a break point. It was a little bit of a roller coaster today, but obviously really happy and happy to be in the semis. Sinner on his win over Rune.

Alcaraz Moves into Semi-Final
Carlos Alcaraz is through to the semi-finals at the 2023 ATP Finals and, despite losing his opening round rubber, finishes top of his group thanks to a 6-4 6-4 victory over Daniil Medvedev.
The Spaniard knew his fate was in his own hands heading into the tie, and while he could still technically qualify with a loss, a win guaranteed his spot in the last four.
On the other hand, Daniil Medvedev headed into his final round-robin match, knowing that whatever happened, he had a spot in the semi-final.
Those contrasting circumstances weren’t evident in the first set, which was a close-run affair only separated by Alcaraz coming up with solid play under pressure to take the opener.
The second set was more comfortable for the Spaniard, with it being almost impossible for Medvedev not to have one eye on the semi-final rather than slogging out an energy-draining three-set win.
Does that mean he tanked? No, but psychologically, it isn’t easy not to think about energy conservation during that second set. Had Medvedev won the first set, that would have changed things entirely, and he’d likely have put his foot on the gas to try and keep his winning momentum heading into the knockout stages.
The final group standings mean Alcaraz will face Djokovic while Medvedev will face off against Sinner on Saturday.
I think the most important thing that I did today was to stay strong mentally. There were a few games on my serve that I was struggling a bit. His return game is amazing and he puts so much pressure on your serve, so I think to stay calm and stay strong mentally in those moments was the key to give myself a chance to win this match. Zverev Signs Off With Victory
Sasha Zverev’s ATP finals ended earlier in the day when Alcaraz secured his semi-final spot alongside Daniil Medvedev, but the German signed off with a win by defeating Andrey Rublev 6-4 6-4.
Zverev’s win means Rublev went 0-3 in the group to end a disappointing tournament, while Zverev can feel unfortunate not to be in the knockout stages, given his impressive victory over Alcaraz in the opener.
